Canopy Mounted E-V Charging Station Photovoltaic System

Blymyer Engineers was selected by Eaton Electrical to work with the Electric Power Research institute (EPRI) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on the development of “solar assisted” electric car charging stations to be used throughout the TVA service area. Blymyer provided complete structural and electrical design and provided construction phase support of this innovative project which incorporates a 12kW photovoltaic array and a battery bank to reduce the impact on the grid of vehicle charging during peak demand periods.

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. furnished design/build services for a $2.5 million solar-powered irrigation system at a commercial citrus ranch in Borrego Springs, California. The project required the installation of a 267 kW photovoltaic ground-mounted array to provide power to a variable frequency drive capable of running a 200-horsepower irrigation water pump. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was responsible for the electrical and civil/structural design, obtaining the planning and building permits, and performing turn-key civil and electrical installation. The project occupies approximately 1 acre of land and required the installation of 1,700 solar panels and associated electrical equipment. It is the largest solar power system in San Diego County and the largest solar driven pump system in the world.

San Bernardino International Airport Solar Study

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. evaluated the feasibility of installing large-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems during the conversion of the former Norton Air Force Base to civilian use as a commercial airport. The 1,500-acre site and associated electrical services were evaluated for ground-, canopy- and roof-mounted PV systems. Also considered were the large areas of current and future construction, as well as the new site usage. Twenty utility meters on the site were evaluated for their current and projected electricity usage, billing rates, and locations relative to suitable PV sites. Recommendations were made for sizing and placement of PV systems at the site based on this physical and economic analysis.

The PV system consists of two hundred sixteen (216) 175-watt modules mounted on top of an existing fuel island canopy, convenience store, and car wash building, and a 30 kW ground-mounted inverter. The PV modules on the car wash building were mounted on elevated steel frames to eliminate shading by roof-mounted structures on the adjacent convenience store. The PV system was installed by Blymyer Engineers’ sister company, BEI Construction.

Oakland Airport Signage

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by the general contractor to provide electrical plans and specifications as required to tie-in and distribute power to seven advertising aspects (signs) for Foster Interstate Media for the Oakland Airport. Our scope of work included designing the tie into the Port of Oakland’s electrical panels, specifying the appropriate breakers and underground power distribution to each of the aspects, terminating in a panel with power meter, with all breakers and time clock interlock installed. This project included the specifications for the test procedures in compliance with the Port’s and NETA standards.

The addition consists of one 12,000-gallon aboveground AVGAS tank, one-20,000 gallon Jet A aboveground storage tank, two twin-hose AVGAS dispensers, and two loading/off-loading control panels. The control panels were recommended by Blymyer Engineers, Inc. to provide safety and to prevent spills during the loading/off-loading process. CNG System Installation

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained to provide engineering services to retrofit an existing diesel fueling facility with a new compressed natural gas fast fill system. The new system utilizes a unique compression and storage system that replaced the final compressor stage with a high-volume hydraulic booster. The hydraulic booster reduces the loads placed on the compressor and lowers the gas storage pressure in the cascade. This was done to reduce the system maintenance requirements and improve the overall safety of the facility. Our scope of work included detailed process piping design, foundation design, permitting, and coordination.

The facility was intended for use by the park service to power their fleet of cars and light trucks in San Francisco. Our scope of work included the facility layout, detailed process piping design, civil engineering and electrical engineering.

Design Natural Gas Fuel Systems

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained to provide design and engineering services for multiple alternative fueling projects throughout the west coast states. Among these projects are: A compressed natural gas (CNG) regulator station in Seattle wherein we prepared the mechanical engineering design. This system utilizes a complex multi-stage regulator system to deliver up to 300 CFM of natural gas into the pipeline from a high pressure tube trailer. A mobile liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling trailer in Sacramento wherein we provided the mechanical design for a new system to refuel a new heavy-duty LNG truck fleet. The entire system was trailer-mounted for ease of use and mobility for future relocation. A high-volume natural gas facility in Oakland where we provided civil, structural, mechanical and electrical design for the entire project. The system was designed to simultaneously fill up to 12 high-pressure trailers and up to 6 vehicles. A 3,000 CFM compressor delivers CNG to the trailers and a 6,000 LNG system is used as a backup fueling system.

CNG Fueling System and Maintenance Shop Upgrade

Blymyer Engineers provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design services for a new CNG fueling system and maintenance shop upgrade for a waste disposal company in Seattle, Washington. The CNG fueling system included three 250 hp compressors, two fast fill dispensers and fifty-five multi-hose time-fill posts. The maintenance shop upgrade included retrofit of eight existing bays with a new heating and ventilation system, gas detection system, and electrical modifications to facilitate servicing of CNG-powered vehicles. Blymyer Engineers also provided MEP design services for a two-bay maintenance shop addition, including a new vehicle wash bay and welding bay.

Alternative Fuel System Design

Blymyer Engineers was retained to provide engineering services to design a new compressed natural gas fast fill system. The new system utilizes two 110 scfm/75 HP compressors with a three bank cascade storage system and dryers. CNG will be dispensed by six duel hose time fill post and one dual hose fast fill dispenser. The fast fill dispenser is controlled by a card reader connected to a fuel management system. Blymyer Engineers’ scope of work included detailed engineering and foundation design, permitting, and coordination.

Alternative Fuel System Design

Blymyer Engineers was retained to provide engineering services for a new CNG system that incorporates 10 slow fill stations for Muni busses. The system employs a 150-scfm dual ANGI compressor and a Zebec Dryer. The Electrical design starts with taking primary power from a newly installed PG&E pole and delivering power to the pad mounted transformer, which then distributes it thru specified switchgear to the equipment. The design package consists of general arrangements, piping and electrical schematics and associated arrangements, structural drawings and written specifications in accordance with the City’s construction codes and standards.

The San Benito High School District employed Blymyer Engineers to design and build their CNG fueling facility to service school buses and other CNG-fueled vehicles operated by the District. The CNG system included time fill stations for overnight vehicle fueling and fast fill dispensers capable of servicing cars, trucks, and transit buses. Blymyer Engineers was responsible for complete design and installation of the system, including mechanical, structural and electrical aspects, attaining all necessary permits; purchasing main equipment components; and performing construction supervision and startup.

Storm Water Compliance Management

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. manages nationwide storm water compliance programs for over 500 transportation facilities. This includes obtaining facility information and completing storm water permit applications, preparing generic and site-specific storm water pollution prevention plans, organizing and setting up storm water sampling, training facility managers and corporate environmental managers in storm water pollution prevention plan and storm water sampling requirements, compliance reporting, preparing California Group Monitoring Plans and Annual Group Evaluation Reports, preparing storm water compliance audit protocols, and developing and maintaining a database to evaluate nationwide compliance. Blymyer Engineers', Inc. staff serve as liaisons to state regulators to solve individual facility compliance issues and negotiate alternative best management practices. Blymyer Engineers', Inc. staff track and interpret storm water regulations nationwide. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. developed a storm water training video to train facility personnel regarding storm water compliance, as well as various regulatory tools and guidelines such as a storm water state-by-state summary for transportation facilities, a vehicle washing compliance manual, and an overall regulatory compliance guideline.

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by Trident Management Inc. to provide environmental engineering and compliance permitting services for the bilge oily water treatment system (BOWTs) operated by TMI. Environmental and compliance permitting services included addressing permits with multiple local, state and federal permitting agencies. Services included preparation of an updated Hazardous Material Business Plan (HMBP) and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC). Revised or new air discharge and waste water discharge permits were also prepared for the operation of the BOWTs facility.

Storm Water Training Seminars and Compliance Management

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. prepares and presents storm water training seminars for facility managers of production, distribution, and warehousing facilities. Blymyer Engineers' staff trains facility managers on their Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) including: equipment and vehicle washing, fueling, maintenance, and product storage best management practices; storm water sampling; and annual report completion. Our staff also prepares and revises SWPPPs for applicable facilities, and prepares the Group Monitoring Plan (GMP) and Annual Group Evaluation Report (AGER). The GMP and AGER summarize the group's monitoring plan and summarize compliance with the California General Storm Water Permit requirements, respectively.

Waste Water Treatment System Design

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by our client to provide turn-key engineering design and construction services required for the selection and layout of a new waste water treatment system. The system was designed to lower zinc concentrations in truck wash effluent to comply with the facility’s existing discharge permit. Our scope of work included selection of the appropriate process equipment that would meet facility and environmental requirements, detailed design of the new installation, and procurement and installation of the equipment. We also helped negotiate a new industrial waste water discharge permit and set up an on-going sampling and maintenance program for the facility.

Material Handling and Packaging Conveying Systems

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained to provide engineering design and construction management services, together with field engineering support for several projects in the packaging and shipping areas of an existing beverage plant. Projects included the layout of new materials handling and conveying systems; verifying and documenting as-built conditions of the existing systems; performing a constructability analysis of proposed changes; developing bid documents, and providing engineering support through the course of construction. The scope of work included the modification or installation of several different systems. These systems included: bottle handling conveyors, a case handling conveyor, glass crushers and cullet conveyors, can filters, shrink-wrapping systems, palletizer, high-speed inspection systems, keg washing systems, bottle washing and recycling systems.

Plant and Facility Layout

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by a large flour mill operation to survey the condition of drainage and of their existing railroad track system. Based on this survey, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. developed a new site plan and provided detailed recommendations for track repairs and drainage improvement. As part of the design, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. diagnosed and provided a solution for the client's frequent derailing problem in several areas of the facility. Engineering Design for Flour Division

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. has completed numerous projects for General Mills, Inc. since the mid-1960's. These projects have included a bulk four blending project, a bulk mill run facility including air conveying storage and truck load-out, grain truck and rail loading and unloading facilities, and packaging conveyor systems for bulk and small packaging. In addition to design engineering and project and construction management services, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. acted as General Mills' representative at various state, county, and city regulating agencies. Our most recent project for General Mills included the conceptual design, permitting, and limited project management for a new bulk storage and load-out facility. The slip form concrete structure is capable of storing up to 800 tons of flour. The flour is then pneumatically conveyed from a separate mill building and is selectively fed from storage to a single lane truck load-out within the building or to an automated packing line in the adjacent warehouse. Key features of this project include: a 75-foot tall slip formed concrete building; pneumatic product conveying throughout; fully enclosed drive-thru load-out; Extra Hazard I Fire Suppression System; semi-automatic load cell weigh bin system for truck loads; and air pollution control for PM-IO compliance.

Installation of the New Powder Sugar Bag Packaging Equipment

Among the numerous projects Blymyer Engineers, Inc. has performed for this manufacturing company, the installation of the new bag packer is the project which involves almost all of the engineering disciplines and is probably is the most challenging project to date. Our client has used the old packaging system for over 50 years. The new bag style requires a new system, which now will be completely automated and PLC controlled. Blymyer Engineer’s responsibilities include providing the arrangement drawings for the feed and discharge systems, design of all structural components of the installation, and procurement of the equipment involved in the process: screw conveyors, belt and roller conveyors, magnets, scales, etc. We are also responsible for the dust collection system design and complete electrical and controls design for the process. Upon completion of the design phase, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. will administer the bidding and contractor selection process. Our responsibilities also include construction and start-up support.

The new system utilizes a unique compression and storage system that replaced the final compressor stage with a high-volume hydraulic booster. Among these projects are: A compressed natural gas (CNG) regulator station in Seattle wherein we prepared the mechanical engineering design. This system utilizes a complex multi-stage regulator system to deliver up to 300 CFM of natural gas into the pipeline from a high pressure tube trailer. A mobile liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling trailer in Sacramento wherein we provided the mechanical design for a new system to refuel a new heavy-duty LNG truck fleet. The entire system was trailer-mounted for ease of use and mobility for future relocation. A high-volume natural gas facility in Oakland where we provided civil, structural, mechanical and electrical design for the entire project. The system was designed to simultaneously fill up to 12 high-pressure trailers and up to 6 vehicles. A 3,000 CFM compressor delivers CNG to the trailers and a 6,000 LNG system is used as a backup fueling system.

The system employs a 150-scfm dual ANGI compressor and a Zebec Dryer. The Electrical design starts with taking primary power from a newly installed PG&E pole and delivering power to the pad mounted transformer, which then distributes it thru specified switchgear to the equipment. The design package consists of general arrangements, piping and electrical schematics and associated arrangements, structural drawings and written specifications in accordance with the City’s construction codes and standards.

The facility includes two 2-story QTA administrative buildings with restrooms, multi-purpose rooms, and large open areas for tenant improvements, and multiple car wash bays. The facility also has two separate consolidated fueling systems, consisting of a total of 120,000 gallons of underground gasoline storage and fuel islands with vacuum, windshield washer fluid, and compressed air services at each fuel dispensing position.

New Coating Plant

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. designed and managed the construction of a 140,000-square-foot plant that coats, tempers, and assembles glass panels typically seen on high-rise buildings. Specific key design aspects included six overhead crane systems, plant air systems, floating floor slabs, cooling water systems, interior loading dock, a 3,000,000-gallon fire water storage and delivery system, and an on-site storm water containment system. Throughout the project, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. participated in land acquisition, long-range planning, process installation, and process start-up.

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was a partner in this Build-Own-Operate-Transfer team and was primarily responsible for the design/build construction with a fast-track construction schedule to design and build a new 70,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Iowa. The project, including the installation and startup of all new equipment, was completed on time and under budget. The total project cost was $24 million dollars. Our scope of work included: project financing, land lease negotiation, construction and equipment lease negotiation, conceptual design, site selection, plant and equipment layout, process piping and control system design, equipment purchase and installation, construction management, start-up and testing, electrical power and distribution system design, and project management. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was also on the interview team for all key personnel hired to manage the facility.

Coater Relocation and Plant Upgrade

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained to relocate a vacuum glass coating machine, purchased from Viratec Thin Films by Samtel of India, to its new home in India. Our scope of work included identifying and documenting power and electrical control systems for the glass coating process line prior to disassembly in its San Diego location. We oversaw the disassembly phase, shipping phase, and reassembly phase in India. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was responsible for design of the India plant process layout in addition to the design of the cable tray system, equipment rooms, power supply system, and power distribution system, as well as engineering the changes mandated by India’s power standards. This included installing a 1MW UPS. At the new plant, we coordinated the construction activities using our supervisors and local contractors to reassemble the equipment and control systems, including installing new and existing power and control systems. Finally, our responsibilities were concluded with the testing, trouble-shooting and resolution, and verifying that the new process line functioned at optimal efficiency.

Assembly-line Sideline Equipment Design

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by this automobile manufacturer to design a new windshield conveying/feed device to transport the windows from the transfer cart and accumulate them next to the assembly line. Our responsibilities included general arrangements and all mechanical details. We provided the bill of materials specifying all buy-out items, selected suppliers, and coordinated shop assembly. This designed piece of machinery operates with all pneumatic controls, it automatically changes its angle to accept a new pack of windows from the transfer car, then automatically delivers one unit at the time as required by the process.

Master Plan for Facility Modifications

Blymyer Engineers’, Inc. prepared a Facility Master Plan of this existing sand plant located at the Port of San Francisco. The goal of the project was to evaluate and make engineering design recommendations for modifications to the site that would enhance facility operations, focusing on improved traffic flows and materials handling efficiency. After coordinating an aerial photo reconnaissance overflight of the facility, we prepared a site layout drawing and then evaluated the existing site layout, including: utilities infrastructure, location of existing equipment, traffic flow, and management of storm water runoff and site drainage. Permitting and regulatory issues were addressed and coordinated with the engineering design modifications to the site.

Fuel System Design

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. provided design and construction management for a new 24,000-gallon aboveground storage tank facility with two 10,000-gallon diesel tanks and one 4,000-gallon gasoline tank for Waste Management of Alameda County. The facility consisted of a remote fuel storage area, covered fuel delivery area, and two covered fueling areas. The equipment included an inventory and leak detection system, a fuel management system, a programmable logic controller, five diesel dispensers, a high-flow bulk diesel dispenser for yard equipment, a gasoline dispenser, and double-walled tanks and piping. As part of construction management, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. provided periodic onsite construction surveillance, tracked the construction schedule, reviewed and approved field modifications, and developed a final punch list for the project.

Asphalt Batch Plant

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained to plan and implement a major improvement project for an existing asphalt batch plant. The project involved replacing or upgrading virtually every system in the plant. The overall concept for the new plant was developed, general arrangement drawings were completed, and criteria for both the detailed design work and construction specifications were set. Once the general arrangements were finalized, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. project managers designed and supervised the installation of several key facility elements. These included new aggregate receiving storage and transfer systems, RAP system, dual-Scale bulk storage and load-out facility, 90,000-gallon aboveground hot asphalt emulsion tank farm, and new 2,000-amp main electrical service. By virtue of the new computer-controlled continuous blending operations and efficient layout, the plant's production capacity was nearly tripled.

Body Shop Equipment Installation

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by this international automotive manufacturer to provide engineering design of several body shop projects involving the installation of new robotic welding and assembly systems. We were required to conform our work to the client’s established standards and procedures and all systems were designed to facilitate installation with an absolute minimum disruption to on-going plant operations. Schedule completion for model change was critical. Our scope of work included the design of electrical power distribution and lighting; piping installation for compressed air, welder cooling water, and process gases; duct work and ventilation systems for arc welding and sealer operations; and structural review of machine and equipment anchorage.

30,000-Gallon Tank Farm

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained to design and manage the installation of a 30,000-gallon aboveground tank farm. While eliminating a specific code compliance issue, this new resin storage system was designed to increase capacity and simplify the handling and distribution of raw materials to manufacturing. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. worked with the client to obtain permit approval and converted two railroad tank cars into permanent storage tanks. The tanks needed to be heated to allow the product to be pumped. Secondary containment for the tanks utilized an oil-water separator for storm water treatment and drainage.

Silt Containment Study and Storm Water Inspections and Sampling

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained to study and solve the quarry's erosion control issue. The silt produced by the quarry obstructed a creek and created a nuisance for its neighbors. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. studied the site and developed a low-cost method to control the silt before it discharged from the quarry property. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. performed monthly site inspections of the quarry for compliance with the facility's Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan, informed client of inspection findings and advised corrective actions as need to ensure compliance, performed biannual sampling and monitored samples for compliance, and wrote and submitted Annual Reports summarizing sampling results and overall storm water permit compliance.

Structural Repair and Conveyor Replacement

After suffering damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the structural supports for this 20-year old sand storage system were repaired and upgraded to meet current seismic standards. In addition, the existing sand receiving system and rail car unloading station were upgraded. This included a new belt conveyor complete with new foundations and supports. Our scope of work included: structural inspections, procurement, construction management, conceptual development, and engineering design.

New PEP Screen and Conveyor Modifications

A new single deck vibratory screen was added to this existing material handling system at a large local quarry. By prescreening the raw material, the fines introduced to the main system were reduced, allowing an increase in total production rates and minimization of carry-over. Special consideration was given to the structural supports of the new screen and to the installation of the new conveyor and chute.

Landfill Closure / Operations & Maintenance

Blymyer Engineers, Inc., as the engineer of record, developed and implemented an operation and maintenance (O&M) project for the closed 544-acre Shoreline Landfill. The O&M project was performed to maintain compliance with the regulatory-approved landfill closure plan. The O&M plan included performing field surveys using both conventional and GPS-based surveys to identify the location and perimeter limits of subsidence zones resulting from settlement of landfill materials. Additional field surveys were also performed to identify areas where surface drainage improvements and slope modifications were necessary. Engineering plans and specifications were prepared. Blymyer Engineers, Inc. assisted in observation of the improvements and prepared the final report. Field work was coordinated so that burrowing owl habitat was not impacted.

Recycling Center Transfer Station

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by JR Miller Architects to provide complete civil design for this 13 acres site for the Fremont garbage disposal and recycling center. The project included re-grading and re-paving for the entire site, design of the storm water retaining and treatment system, as well as design of water and sewer service to the building. Our scope of work also included the preparation of a site-specific Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), erosion control plan and extensive involvement in addressing FEMA regulatory issues since the site is located in a designated flood zone. Full support was provided to the client during the permitting and construction bidding process.

One of the first recycling facilities of this size. Today it is processing about 3200 ton of waste a day. Phase I - Recycling of the curb side commingled product was constructed in 1992, Phase II, facility expansion to handle all household waste was built in 1994. Mr. Mazur prepared general arrangement layouts, coordinated equipment selection and specifications and developed detailed design drawings for the project. Our scope of work included structural design of all foundation, pads, ramps, stairs and awning for the CSB. The facility consisted of six 10,000-gallon underground fuel storage tanks, one 280-gallon aboveground motor oil tank, one 280-gallon aboveground waste oil tank, one 500-gallon oil-water separator, a vacuum system, a lube system, and overhead product reels. Our scope of work included the design engineering for the entire fuel and lube systems and related electrical design. As part of our project management services, Blymyer Engineers, Inc. obtained necessary permits, performed the rough piping inspection, final site inspection, reviewed and approved field modifications, and developed the final punch list.

New Fueling and Maintenance Facility Design

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by a the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Intl Airport/URS to provide the conceptual layout, detailed engineering design, project management, and construction inspection services for a new fueling and maintenance facility, including the installation of 150,000 gallons of gasoline, fifty-nine twin-hose dispensers, carpet and windshield cleaning fluids systems, motor oil and waste oil system, and compressed air and vacuum systems. Our scope of work included the fueling facility arrangement, detailed engineering design, obtaining equipment quotes, review contractor quotes and submittals, and site inspections during the life of the project.

Vehicle Maintenance Facility Design

Blymyer Engineers, Inc. was retained by a national car rental agency to provide the conceptual layout, detailed piping design, and mechanical engineering services for a new 12-bay vehicle maintenance facility in Orlando, Florida. This facility consists of the installation of one 1,000-gallon aboveground motor oil tank, one 1,000-gallon aboveground waste oil tank with two evacuation pumps, one 280-gallon aboveground windshield washer fluid tank, eight hose reel banks, compressed air system, bus maintenance pit, car lifts, and tire changing equipment. Our scope of work included the equipment arrangement and detailed piping designs.
