Ash Creek Solar is one of the largest utility-scale solar projects in Texas

One of the largest utility-scale solar projects in the state of Texas is now operating. Blymyer Engineers provided design and engineering services for Ash Creek Solar’s PV and substation in partnership with the EPC SOLV Energy and developer Primergy. The project, which was commissioned in July 2025, sits on 3,000 acres strategically located between Austin and Dallas.

Blymyer provided electrical engineering, structural engineering, substation design, SCADA design/drafting assistance, and permitting assistance for the 408MW PV system and 34.5/345kV substation. According to Primergy, the Ash Creek project is well suited to water-constrained environments like Texas, where shifting patterns of precipitation and more intensive farming practices restrict existing water supplies. Ash Creek aims to provide low-cost energy, contribute significantly to local taxes, and offer substantial community and environmental benefits.

Texas surpasses California in utility solar

Utility-scale solar generation has been growing steadily across the country, as solar capacity additions help meet increased electricity demands. According to a recent U.S. Energy Information Administration report, Texas recently surpassed California in utility-scale solar generation. In fact, the EIA projects that electricity generation from solar could exceed coal in Texas for the first time in 2026. “This project is an example of how the state of Texas is leading in solar development,” says Chris Gleason, Blymyer Director of Utility Scale Projects. “We’re proud to partner with Primergy on this project.”
