The rapid expansion of renewable energy projects in the Middle East

The Middle East is expected to invest more than $75 billion in renewable energy projects between 2025 and 2030, according to a recent report issued by the Energy Industries Council (EIC).The 116 projects that are slated will run the gamut of renewable energy sources.

An incremental transition

While the region’s clean energy investments are increasing significantly, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that only 20 percent of the energy investments will be focused on renewables, with the major funds still being spent in the traditional oil and gas sector. Despite increasing interest in clean energy, the region remains focused primarily on hydrocarbon production, given its abundant gas reserves. Still, the Middle East remains a key focus for the EIC, which is encouraged by the large number of clean energy projects in the pipeline.

“Most spending is understandably going to oil and gas, but we are seeing cleantech projects in hydrogen, solar, wind, and carbon capture,” said Aqilah Shahruddin, author of the EIC report. “So, it’s a balancing act between producing clean energy and maintaining the region’s dominance in the global hydrocarbon market.”

An increasing area of focus for Blymyer

“The EIC report is welcome news for the entire renewable energy industry as well as Blymyer,” says Greg Mazur, Blymyer Director of Engineering. “With hundreds of projects in 43 U.S. states (amounting to about 15% of the total solar capacity in the U.S) and 5 countries, our firm is earning an outstanding reputation in the solar industry. Blymyer’s completed solar design at the Qatar Science & Technology Park in Doha, Qatar demonstrates our ability to mobilize our extensive resources and end-to-end design and engineering services internationally.”
